A Busy Person's Guide to Spending Time With God Throughout the Day

I just don’t have enough time in the day.

I’ve heard this phrase from almost everyone so much that it has come to replace our usual greetings. I understand how difficult it is to try to cram more into our days when we have a million things on our plates.

With our busy schedules, how can we develop a lasting relationship with God and maintain a devotional life? How do we keep our quiet time in place when life gets so crazy?

In an article from Finding God Among Us, we realize that,

It’s easy to lose touch with God when we let the busyness of life fill our days. We try to fit God into our schedules rather than fitting our schedules around God. Spending time with God seems to be the first thing that gets crossed off the priority list

Yet Keela of Wholeheartedly Messy shares that God should be our #1 priority, no matter what.

Today, I’ll share some tips on how we can spend time with God and build an intimate relationship with Him even when we’re busy with our lives.

Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty, is divided between God and the world.
— James 4:8

Make God a Priority

Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
— Matthew 6:33

Fact is, we spend time on what’s important to us. We find the time for people & things that are important to us… and we know how important God is in our lives.

In Shanté’s blog in Daily She Pursues, she talks about how God needs to be the #1 priority in our lives before we can even begin to successfully spend more time with HIm throughout the day. God wants to be the one we pursue above everyone and everything else.

As we go on with our day, it’s best to use our time wisely to get the most out of it, allowing us to spend more meaningful time with God throughout our day and maintain our responsibilities.

If we’re not intentional with our time and efforts, nothing will truly work. As we become more intentional about our time with God, we need to bear in mind that we spend this time with God because we love him and want to know him more.

It’s also helpful if we get rid of unnecessary distractions. If we’re being honest, many of us fail to give Him our undivided attention. And sometimes, God just needs a few minutes from us.

Better Everyday Habits Centered on God

Spending time with God puts everything else into perspective.

So how do we, in the words of Philip Yancey, "reach for the invisible God?"

The answer is simple enough: We make it a habit. In Lifeway’s article, Make a Habit of Spending Time with God, Carol shares that the trick seems to be keeping our intentional efforts from becoming empty rituals that contain our spiritual efforts rather than enliven them.

The article also shares about John Ortberg, author of The Life You’ve Always Wanted, who says that consistent spiritual discipline becomes, "a rhythm for living in which we can grow more intimately connected to God."

Finding a rhythm allows us to tap into our source of strength, faith, and joy. In doing so, we become more like God's children as we spend time with Him.

Where can we prioritize more time with God?

In the article, How to Make Time for God with a Busy Schedule, we’re reminded that when it comes to spending time with God is remember that’s there no “one way” to spend time with God. This might take some trial and error, but try to discover which ways you connect with God best.

Here are some ways to incorporate God in our everyday routines:

  1. Win your mornings by setting aside 10 extra minutes a day for God. Allow your body to reflect your heart. Bow low in humility before God, get on your knees in prayer, or hold your hands out in acknowledgment that anything you receive comes from God.

  2. Meditate in prayer as you take a cold, refreshing shower.

  3. Dance to songs of worship before you leave the house. It’s a fun way to invite positivity in as you go out into the world.

  4. Say a prayer of thanksgiving before and after meals.

  5. Bring God into your everyday conversations. Share about your own journey.

As we find more creative ways to spend time with God throughout our day, let’s remember that each moment is another opportunity to reconnect with Him.
