How To Have A Relationship With God

What Is The Unforgivable Sin

It is mentioned in the gospels that an angel revealed Mary's conception to Joseph. He was told that Jesus would save his people from their sins (Luke 1:21). Among the compelling stories about Jesus forgiving sins are the following:

  • The parables of the Prodigal Son

  • The woman who was adulterous

  • The paralytic man miraculously healed of physical ailments

The scriptures teach that the Lord will forgive any sin if we repent and place our hope in Christ. However, one verse seems to contradict the rest of the Bible until we understand the context. Jesus says that “blasphemy against the Holy Spirit” is an unforgivable sin.

How can there be an unforgivable sin if all sins are forgivable in Christ? Here are the top articles to explain this.

Guilty Of An Eternal Sin

Got Questions discusses that the unpardonable/unforgivable sin or “blasphemy of the Holy Spirit” is mentioned in Mark 3:22–30 and Matthew 12:22–32. Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter” (Mark 3:28), but then He gives one exception: “Whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin” (verse 29).

According to Jesus, the unpardonable or unforgivable sin is unique. It is the one iniquity that will never be forgiven (“never” is the meaning of “either in this age or in the age to come” in Matthew 12:32). The unforgivable sin is blasphemy (“defiant irreverence”) of the Holy Spirit in the context of the Spirit’s work in the world through Christ. In other words, the particular case of blasphemy seen in Matthew 12 and Mark 3 is unique. The guilty party, a group of Pharisees, had witnessed irrefutable evidence that Jesus was working miracles in the power of the Holy Spirit, yet they claimed that He was possessed by the prince of demons, Beelzebul (Matthew 12:24; Mark 3:30).

It is common for people to feel they have committed some sin that God cannot or will not forgive, and they do not believe there is hope for them. Keeping people under that misperception is what Satan wants. Whenever a sinner is convicted, God gives him encouragement (James 4:8)

Feeling Hopeless

An article by David Mathis talked about the unforgivable sin and finding hope when in despair. He explained what Jesus actually said.  Jesus hadn’t been teaching in public long when his hearers began comparing him to their teachers, called “the scribes,” part of the conservative Jewish group known as the Pharisees. The growing crowds “were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes” (Mark 1:22). The scribes heard the comparison and felt the tension, and soon escalated it (Mark 2:6, 16), as these Bible teachers of the day, with their many added traditions, quickly grew in their envy, and then hatred, for Jesus. The threat is so great these conservatives even are willing to cross the aisle to conspire with their liberal rivals, the Herodians (Mark 3:6).

Jesus calmly answers their lie with basic logic and turns it to make a statement about his lordship. Then he warns these liars, who know better deep down, of the spiritual danger they’re in. (Mark 3:28–30)

There is hope for those who fear that they have committed an "unforgivable sin", or even that their hearts have already become so hardened. Read more in this article here and find out more good news about it.

10 Things About The Unforgivable Sin

Dr. David Jeremiah enumerated the 10 things you need to know about the unforgivable sin:

1. Jesus mentions the unforgivable sin in the gospel of Mark.

2. To correctly understand the unforgivable sin passage, you need to look at the very last phrase.

3. The unforgivable sin is not a thoughtless mistake.

4. There is a Greek verb that proves it’s not an instant reaction.

5. It shows us that progressive rejection can be the most dangerous.

6. Knowing the Word of God isn’t enough.

7. We can be hardened to spiritual truth by living in the middle of it.

8. The unforgivable sin is denying the deity of Christ.

9. Rejecting the Holy Spirit and rejecting the deity of Christ are connected.

10. If you’re worried that you may have committed a sin God will not forgive-you’ve likely not committed this sin.

Hardening your heart against God and continuously denying his please to your soul constitutes the unforgivable sin. If someone rejects Jesus Christ, they have no hope of being forgiven anywhere else or when they die, here or in the hereafter. The only way to God is through Jesus. All Are Capable Of Committing The Unforgivable Sin

In a blog written by R.C. Sproul,he describes several times in his teaching career when distraught Christians have come to him to ask about the unpardonable sin. According to him, may people believed that the unpardonable sin is committing murder or adultery. They realize that those sins have grave consequences for the sanctity of life and marriage. However, the author assured that neither sin is unpardonable.

Jesus then stated that “all sins” can be forgiven, including “whatever blasphemies”—except for the specific blasphemy of the Spirit. Luke’s account of this teaching is even more specific: “Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but to him who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven”

As Christians, we are all capable of committing the unforgivable sin. Want to ask if you will be saved or are you worried that you may have committed the unpardonable sin? Check the complete details here and read the author's take about this.

Resisting The Presence Of The Holy Spirit

Similar to what R.C. Sproul mentioned in his blog, Billy Graham offered another interesting insight about Christians who feared that they had committed an unpardonable sin. They have no reason to worry. Those who are true followers of Jesus Christ can not commit the unforgivable sin.

The one sin which God cannot forgive is mentioned in Mark 3:28-30 and Matthew 12:31-32. Jesus had been performing miracles, including driving demons out of people by the power of the Holy Spirit. Instead of recognizing the source of Jesus’ power and accepting Him as God’s Son, the religious leaders accused Him of being possessed by the devil and driving demons out in the power of the devil.

Jesus responded by saying, “I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin.”

Christians who commit the unpardonable sin are not guilty of any serious sin committed before or after they accept Christ, nor are they guilty of disrespecting the Holy Spirit in any way. It is rather actively resisting the presence of the Holy Spirit until death ends all opportunities to turn to Jesus. Find out how the question of the unforgivable sin was answered here

In today's world, Christians do not need to be concerned about a specific sin moment, but a hard heart that would see Jesus as true, but turn away unrepentant - like the hardness of a heart that is incapable of repentance. Forgiveness is not denied, rather it is not sought. Having become so recalcitrant, and at odds with God's Spirit, the heart can no longer confess its sins.
